The University of Wisconsin at Madison is getting $1 million for a Russian language centre. Lots of money for one school. The money comes from the US Department of Defense. The US Air Force pays a bonus to people who speak a foreign language. Given the size of the US Defense Department budget, spending a little bit on language learning is a great idea. What is more, rewarding people for their language learning achievements seems to me a more promising investment than plowing money into schools. The many language learning resources now being developed for the internet and for portable devices like the iPod, will make the schools largely obsolete in a few years, unless of course they adapt to take advantage of these new developments.
